Frequent Questions and Answers:

What is T-Booster and how do I benefit?

T-Booster offers a technique to conserve network bandwidth by compressing the resources transferred thereby increasing connection throughput, which either results in lower fees payed for fast connections like DSL OR in shorter response times for modem connections. T-Booster is for those who are paying a fee based on traffic consumption; have monthly download limit or using narrowband connection.

Is T-Booster an open source project?

No, it is not an open source project although two major components of this service are open source projects.

Is T-Booster for free?

Yes, T-Booster is for free.

How do I use T-Booster?

Using T-Booster is easy. Simply download the package which suits your platform and set the following HTTP, HTTPS and FTP proxy settings for the connection you wish to use: 127.0.0.1 port 8080. Please refer to your system help on how to change proxy settings. Our Configs page may also be useful and shows how to configure certain applications. If you have personal firewall running you may need to allow Java Internet access as well. If your package contains just a single jar file you can double click on to run it.

How secure is T-Booster?

You should always take measures to protect your information and use personal firewalls. The major components of the service are open source projects and are secure and reliable. All SSL connections remain secure with T-Booster.

What compression scheme is being used?

We use lossless compression provided by JZlib library - re-implementation of zlib in pure java. JZlib is copyrighted by ymnk, JCraft,Inc. and is licensed through BSD-style license.

Is there content caching involved in the technique?

No, there is no content caching in T-Booster client. Standard browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox or Opera do that anyway.
However, T-Booster Proxy Server and our T-Booster Servers use Squid, a caching proxy.

What compression level can be expected?

The compression ratio will depend on the type of content you are consuming. For HTTP traffic you can expect about 30% savings of traffic for outgoing requests and about 70% of savings for downloads. However, this assumes, that the downloads do not contain any graphics. In case they do, you achieve the same savings when using maximum graphics reduction.

Can I expect connection speed improvement relevant to compression level?

You can expect significant connection speed improvements for narrowband connections (modem) although speed improvements for broadband connections can be not obvious.

How can I measure throughput improvements?

You can use online throughput testers such as http://www.toast.net/performance/

Because it is java implementation does this mean the performance is moderate?

No it does not. We believe our implementation is performance efficient enough and this is why we offer the package which is built from the same code and targeted to the limited devices such as mobile phones.

Does T-Booster work with HTTPS traffic ?

Yes. Please be aware that compression level won’t be so great just because of the nature of the encrypted data.

Is E-mail compressed?

Yes, your email application can be configured to compress incoming e-mail traffic as well as outgoing. Our Configs page shows how to configure certain email clients.

Can the sis file from Symbyan’s package be used on other than Sony Ericsson P-Series devices?

It's been tested on P-Series only but was compiled against "Personal Java Application Environment Specification (PJAE)" version 1.1.1. Therefore you can give it a try on other limited devices as well.

Can I chain my proxy server to T-Booster client application?

Yes. You can chain your proxy server to our client application. We would recommend the use of a non-graphical user interface package for this. T-Booster must run on the same box as your proxy server.

What Java Runtime Environment you would recommend to use?

For non-mobile phone configurations we would recommend to use the latest JREs taken either from IBM (currently 1.4.x) or Sun (currently 1.5.x).

Will T-Booster work with all Internet connections?

T-Booster works with any Internet connection including dial-up, ISDN, ADSL, GSM, GPRS and other wireless connections. As long as you have an Internet connection, T-Booster will conserve its bandwidth.

Does T-Booster work with mobile phones used as a data modem?

As long as you are connecting to the mobile phone with your PC or MAC laptop which has the T-Booster client software installed, then it does work.

Can I still use my ISP?

Yes. T-Booster requires no changes to your ISP. You keep the same email, the same phone numbers and all the same other settings you may have with your current ISP.

Can I continue using my Web browser/E-mail client/etc?

Yes. T-Booster does not require any special Web browser/email client/etc.

We are using a shared Internet connection in our LAN. Where should we install T-Booster software?

You should install T-Booster client on every computer that you wish to accelerate. However, there are some advantages using an internet-gateway computer for sharing the internet connection in a LAN: Central anti-virus software, central firewall, possibility of private email-server including central anti-spam, possibility of private web-page(s), central content caching, central DNS-caching, central content filtering etc. For this scenario, we offer the T-Booster Proxy Server.

Our network is behind firewall. Is that a problem?

No. For a high-class firewall it MIGHT be necessary to explicitly open port 8080 for T-Booster to work.

Our network is behind a proxy. Is that a problem?

Yes. In your case it would be better to install T-Booster Proxy Server on your proxy server and point your proxy to T-Booster as another proxy in the chain.

Does T-Booster interfere with antivirus software?

That depends on. T-Booster client works like a local proxy, so in case the antivirus-software is well-behaved, there should be no problem. However, there might be the necessity to do some special setup for the antivirus-software.

How can I get help or submit a problem report?
